Chapter 8: Therapy
Fernando’s Spa was a place where an everyday woman or friendly fag could feel like a noble queen. Although Fernando himself disliked me, and I abhorred him to his marrow, he did have a worthy establishment. His staff consisted of fifteen men and women: acupuncturist, herbal specialist, physical fitness trainer, dietician, two masseurs, an aromatherapy specialist, and others. The staff wore white from head to toe and barely spoke. Zen was unearthed in every corner and offered endless bliss. The reason I decided to take Liv up on her offer was simple: I did feel a little broken over the zoologist, and I knew that Fernando would ignore me, keeping his distance, since we shared a racy past.
Our history was ugly. Bottom line: we dated on and off throughout the last two years. We kissed occasionally on those dates, and once we went all the way. Although Fernando was beautiful with his Latino skin and fall-into blue eyes, and he knew how to ride a man’s ass like a porn star, our chemistry together lacked immensely. I was night and he was day. Throughout time I had learned that our indiscreet battles consisted of politics, religion, money, and gay rights. The basics of our relationship were purely elementary: he was a dog person and I preferred the company of cats. To keep my distance from the man was rational. He loathed me, and I did not find him to be the joy in my life. Case closed.
Showing up at his spa was scandalous, a bit ballsy, and certainly dangerous for me. I had Liv’s company, though, and knew she would protect me, like a valiant heroine, from Fernando’s differences, safe inside her proximity. Liv would not allow the man to insult me, particularly since she was dropping a considerable chunk of change for our Saturday girl-time at the spa; I learned later that day that her wealthy gay uncle, Jackson Marlow, and Fernando’s current boyfriend, had picked up our tab.
We spent the late morning in a mud bath while listening to the sounds of melodic harps, dispersed from ceiling speakers. We were served mineral water and Tibetan tea. Following our baths, Chinese masseurs worked the pain out of our shoulders, legs, and backs.
Face down on a comfortable leather masseur bed in a plain room decorated in light browns and calming whites, half-concealed by fluffy melon-colored towels, and feeling Chen’s knuckles roll against my naked spine, I listened to Liv ask, “Why are you hurting over Donlito when you hardly even know him?”
I sighed out of contentment for the massage and my companion’s valued company. “Our destinies want us as being together.”
“How do you know that? The last time I checked, you weren’t a soothsayer.”
“I just did.” I spoke in past tense, already learning to recover from the zoologist’s inflicted pain.
“Perhaps it was love at first sight.”
“I think so.”
“Do you really believe in that, Casper?” Her tone suggested judgment, but I ignored it, enjoying my morning man-therapy at the spa.
